As part of the Auckland Heritage Festival with this year’s theme of Love, Peace and Protest, we bring you Joan and Lloyd Whittakers’ Love Story. This one hour performance is held at the Waiheke Musical Museum which they founded, and narrated with music performed from their unique collection of musical instruments. Lloyd and Joan’s courtship ultimately led to the creation of this unique museum. Their love for each other and for old instruments took them from Taranaki to Waiheke Island, where visitors today can see their remarkable collection of carefully restored instruments.
This is a story that deserves to be told. It weaves together many strains: a chance meeting of two young people, music, New Zealand’s early colonial history, and craftsmanship, all underlined by their love not only for each other but for people everywhere.
Come and hear their uplifting story.
